Following Hurricane Sandy, the Rotary Club of Fukushima South reached across the Pacific to return the favor. On May 11, 2013, Dave Erdman, Past President of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise, traveled to Staten Island to deliver a donation from the Rotary Club of Fukushima South and Honolulu Sunrise to the people of Staten Island.

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, I traveled to Staten Island to meet with Lisa Bova-Hiatt, daughter-in-law of Honolulu Sunrise Past President) Carolyn Hiatt. Lisa grew up and lives in Staten Island and ran the large shelter during Hurricane Sandy. She is still involved with several relief organizations in the area as well as with individual families who are in most desperate need. Lisa is an attorney with the New York City Law Department and was loaned to Staten Island to assist with the disaster shelter and subsequent relief efforts.

On my arrival, Lisa met me and we went to the Siller Foundation – named after Stephen Siller, a New York Fireman from Staten Island who died at the World Trade Center after running through the Brooklyn Tunnel in full gear to help with the fire at the Towers. Frank Siller was also a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow. The foundation is called “Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation” with a goal of “Doing Good.” Currently the foundation is supporting relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Fukushima South and the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise, we presented a check to Anthony Navarino, Director of Event Planning for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Lisa and I also toured Staten Island to see first hand the devastation and toll that Superstorm Sandy made, and to see the progress as well as asess long-term needs.

We met with Farid Kader who oversees the organization Yellow Boots and presented a check for their ongoing efforts. Their “Yellow Team” works with  ”Boots on the Ground” to clean up homes using teams of volunteers.

This Memorial Day, may the memories of loved ones lost during 9-11, the Fukushima tsunami and Hurricane Sandy bring us closer together in peace and goodwill.

Carole Hayashino joined the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i as its president and executive director in 2012. She oversees all operations, programs and development of the Cultural Center. She is also on the board of the United Japanese Society of Hawai‘i and member of the Hiroshima and Fukuoka Kenjin Kai. Prior to joining the JCCH team, Hayashino served as vice president for university advancement at California State University Sacramento where she oversaw the external relations of the university including The University Foundation at Sacramento State, alumni relations, university marketing, and publications. She was elected to two terms to the Board of Trustees of the College of Marin in 2004 and 2008.

She has also served as associate director of the National Japanese American Citizens League headquartered in San Francisco and was involved in the national legislative effort for redress and reparations for Americans of Japanese ancestry incarcerated during World War II. She served on the advisory board to the California State Library Civil Liberties Public Education Program responsible for awarding grant funds to educational projects to preserve and teach the Japanese American experience.

Hayashino earned her undergraduate degree at San Francisco State University and graduate degree in educational administration at the University of San Francisco.

Nicholas Papp is Diplomat-in-Residence & Visiting Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu. A U.S. Foreign Service Officer with 14 years’ experience at the U.S. Department of State, he has served at American Embassies in Iraq, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates as well as at the American Institute in Taiwan. His functional specialty is public diplomacy, including managing educational and cultural exchange programs.  He holds a B.A. in Economics & Government from Cornell University and an MBA in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Tony is currently supports HMSA’s Government Programs working with multiple government sponsors both locally and nationally. The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise is very proud to participate in the Weinberg Family Programs Grant for the 14th year in a row. This year, we painted Winner’s Camp Leadership Academy and earned $10,000 from the Weinberg Grant for YO! Youth Outreach for homeless and street-identified youth. Great job everyone!

Mahalo to Colin Kippen for speaking to us on homelessness in Hawaii. As we look at our lives, he describes us as living “above the abyss.” We have our education, jobs, financial security, mental and physical health and the support of family and friends which helps to keep us balanced and secure. Sometimes all it takes is the loss of one of these, the introduction of drugs, or an event that changes our situation, to cause a person to fall into the abyss, and into homelessness. Colin is working with organizations throughout the state, including public and private entities, churches, non-profits, community organizations, housing and shelter programs to create comprehensive solutions for Hawaii’s homeless.

 It’s been 40 years since he first made his welcome remarks to the Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Kurayoshi. Dave lived in Kurayoshi City when he was 16 years old as a Rotary International Exchange Student for a year. He visited Kurayoshi to attend the IM Inter-City Meeting for District Rotarians and local residents to learn more about Rotary. He was a speaker at the conference—and spoke in Japanese! The Theme was “Good Rotary Life” and his topic was “My Rotary Moments.” Yoku dekimashita, Dave! Well done!

OTHER GOOD DEEDS

$17,000 Becomes $100,000 for Rotoplast

Honolulu Sunrise joined clubs throughout District 5000 to raise $17,000 for Rotoplast, which provides corrective surgeries such as hair lip corrections. Our funds were leveraged by Rotary International to become $100,000! This demonstrates the power of Rotary.

100% Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) – Honolulu Sunrise achieved our goal of $100 per capita from each dues-paying member and 100% participation of members contributing some amount to the Annual Program Fund during 2012-2013.

100% EREY Sustaining Clubs – Honolulu Sunrise achieved our goal of every dues-paying member donating at least $100  to the Annual Program Fund during 2012-2013.

Weinberg Friends Program ~ Winner’s Camp on April 27th

Once again, mahalo to all the members of Honolulu Sunrise, “The Read To Me Club.” Your donations, fundraising efforts and contributions make it possible for our club to support literacy in Hawaii. This year, we once again participated in the District 5000 dictionary giveaway and donated dictionaries to two classes of 3rd graders at Royal School. The students were proud to have a book of their own!

Coordinator on Homelessness Colin Kippen and Governor Abercrombie

Last year, Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed legislation Friday that created the Hawaii Interagency Council on Homelessness as part of the state Department of Human Services. The council’s purpose is to implement the State Strategic Plan to End and Prevent Homelessness. Colin Kippen, 62, was appointed by the governor to take over as homelessness coordinator, a post that has no staff support but is teamed with a special council enacted by state law. Kippen’s responsibility is to oversee the completion of a 10-year plan to end homelessness by attacking various strands of the knotty problem.

Kippen’s past public service experience includes serving as the executive director of the National Indian Education Association in Washington, D.C. He is also a former executive director of the Native Hawaiian Education Council.

The UH Cancer Center was completed under budget and ahead of schedule and combines style with functionality.

UH Cancer Center houses a “dry lab” (computers) and “wet lab” (laboratory).

Open hallways serve as meeting rooms, letting light and the view nourish the building with a feeling of health.

The University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center is positioned to become a world leader in eliminating cancer through research, education and improved patient care. Under the leadership of Dr. Michele Carbone the  conducts research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer across a broad array of disciplines. Research areas of focus include epidemiology, molecular carcinogenesis, prevention methods, quality of life in cancer survivors, new therapeutic approaches to cancer treatment, and community-based interventions to promote cancer preventive lifestyles in the state’s multi-ethnic population.

A Painting We Will Go ~ Winner’s Camp on April 27th

Dr. Carbone leads a multi-disciplinary, international team of scientists in the study of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer affecting the mesothelial lining of the lungs and internal chest wall. This deadly cancer, linked with exposure to mineral fibers such as asbestos and erionite, is difficult diagnose at early stages. Late stage mesothelioma is resistant to treatment. As the global use of asbestos and other mineral fibers, continue to rise, the development of improved diagnostic tools and therapies for mesothelioma requires critical attention.

Dr. Carbone and his team have demonstrated that mineral fibers and viruses are co-carcinogens in the transformation of human mesothelial cells into cancer cells. They found that SV40, a DNA tumor virus found in contaminated human polio vaccines, causes mesothelioma in animals, causes malignant transformation of human mesothelial cells in tissue culture and is present in some mesothelioma biopsies. Dr. Carbone’s work has elucidated the molecular mechanisms that lead from SV40 infection to the formation of mesothelioma.

Weinberg Friends Program: Winner’s Camp

The Weinberg Foundation approved our Weinberg Friends Program Grant, giving us the go ahead to paint Winner’s Camp in exchange for a $10,000 donation to our recipient of choice, the YO! House for homeless and street-identified youth. Let’s paint!

Location: Meet at Burger King in Hawaii Kai Towne Center (near Costco, Hawaii Kai) at 7:45am. Carpool to Winners’s Camp at 9001 Kamehame Drive, Honolulu, Hawai’i 96824 (between Hawaii Kai and Kalama Valley)
