<p>December 12, 2011 ~ What do you do when the holidays come crashing in on you? Or when old baggage from the past creeps into the present? Dr. James Deutch, this week&#8217;s speaker, is a licensed clinical social worker and a lecturer at the University of Hawai’i in the areas of parenting, marriage and family, and relationships. He is also the Senior Counselor at the Family Education Training Center of Hawai’i, a family strengthening and counseling program located on the Manoa campus of the University of Hawai’i.</p>
<p>So what did we learn in our 20-minute pre-holiday session?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-and-bettie.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-817" title="deutch and bettie" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-and-bettie.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" /></a>We learned that Bettie Bernie doesn&#8217;t have any holiday angst (but she will if we don&#8217;t get our Christmas cards).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-and-paul.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-816" title="deutch and paul" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-and-paul.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" /></a>We also learned that even manager, author, ultra-runner, father, and husband Paul Sibley can&#8217;t cram more hours into a day, or more correctly, 11 extra hours of running into a week that&#8217;s already filled with visiting family and holiday plans? (He&#8217;s got a solution, but shhhh, we can&#8217;t tell.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-rebecca.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-814" title="deutch rebecca" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-rebecca.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" /></a>We learned that Rebecca Ahina isn&#8217;t as calm as she looks, but soon she&#8217;ll be letting her holiday stress just flow right past her just like teflon.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/mollie-nan-car.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-815" title="mollie nan car" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/mollie-nan-car.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="405" /></a>We learned that Mollie Sperry asks hard questions.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/carolyn-mom.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-813" title="carolyn mom" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/carolyn-mom.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" /></a>We learned that Carolyn Hiatt needs a lot more practice if she&#8217;s wants to portray a frightening, nagging mom.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-mike.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-812" title="deutch mike" src="http://www.rotaryhonolulusunrise.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/deutch-mike.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" /></a>And lastly, we learned that President-Elect Mike Doss runs a pretty fun meeting.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Deutch&#8217;s 12 simple steps for the holidays.</strong><br />
1. Choose to take control of the holidays.<br />
2. Acknowledge that you have human feelings.<br />
3. Reach out.<br />
4. Be realistic.<br />
5. Be accepting of imperfect relatives and friends.<br />
6. Make a budget and stick to it.<br />
7. Plan ahead.<br />
8. Say &#8220;no&#8221; if saying &#8220;yes&#8221; is not right for you.<br />
9. Stay healthy.<br />
10. Take time for yourself.<br />
11. Take time to be with your family.<br />
12. Seek professional or clerical help if you need assistance.</p>
<p><strong>Bringing Holiday Cheer to the Kakaako Homeless Shelter</strong></p>
<p>Gift Wrapping: Dec 19, Delivery of gifts: Dec 23</p>
<p>Next week we&#8217;ll be wrapping gifts for 165 homeless adults at the Kakaako Homeless Shelter. Paul will be picking up personal hygiene products and non-perishable foods. Sr. Terry Young donated toothbrushes and toothpaste. More donations are welcome. Also, we could use a hand making deliveries. For details, contact Nancy Walden.</p>
